Hiking in the South

(Lookout Mountain, TN)

I may not be the most athletic person on the planet,
but I love any excuse to soak up the beauty of the great outdoors.
As summer draws to an end, I've been dreaming of Autumn and all the fun activities that the cooler weather brings...especially hiking.

There are so many things that I love about hiking.
There's just something special about feeling the ground crunch beneath your feet, while the warm sun beats down through the falling leaves. It's the most awesome form of exercise, because it doesn't seem like exercise at all. Instead, hiking feels like a grand adventure. I love climbing over rocks and crossing streams, making discoveries at every turn. Scenic trails offer so much beauty, from rock formations and trickling waterfalls to gorgeous mountaintop views. Hiking even offers an opportunity to become one with this amazing Earth. It's an awesome feeling, venturing into the wilderness, leaving the madness of the modern world behind. If you're lucky, you may even catch a peek at some elusive wildlife in the woods.

Before Hudson was born, we hiked one of the best places in Alabama, the Sipsey Wilderness. The Sipsey is the place to go if you want to see some beautiful sights on your hike. There are waterfalls, canyons, sandstone cliffs, and amazing rock formations. There are lots of possibilities there for exploring, especially in the Fall and Winter when the leaves have fallen. I would love to go back soon, and take Hudson along to enjoy a modified trail trek....hiking is fun for all ages!

While I've been thinking a lot about getting out on the trails, I've also been browsing online, creating a little wish list of some outdoor adventure gear I'd love to have. TheClymb is a really great thrifty option for finding quality gear for your hike! They have everything you need to make your trail adventure a success, because even the shortest of hikes require some helpful hiking gear.

As most any woman knows, the most important part of any outfit is the shoes! When hiking, you must be comfortable and practical. Unfortunately, your favorite pair of running shoes won't cut it on a trail. Hiking boots can help prevent injury by providing support and flexibility, and a good pair of hiking socks can keep blisters at bay.

In addition to boots, hikers require some other important things on the trails: sunscreen, first aid kit, water, snacks, and so much more. The best way to carry all of these essentials is in a durable, lightweight backpack. I am not a fan of oversized packs, that quickly become a nuisance.

When dressing for a hike, it's important to wear layers. Your clothing should be comfortable and breathable. It should provide protection from the sun and other elements. Layers will ensure your comfort, no matter what kind of weather conditions you may face.

Fall is just around the corner. I can't wait to gather up some gear and enjoy the great outdoors!!
