Our trip to the Birmingham Zoo was beautiful, despite damp weather and unseasonably cool temperatures. Hudson got up close and personal with lots of amazing animals: he and Dada held pretty birds in the aviary, he patted a rooster, and he touched a goat.
We saw lots of creatures on the Trails of Africa exhibit and the Alabama Wilds Walk. My favorite part was a very personable bird, that stood as tall as me and looked curiously similar to a dinosaur's descendant. Will loved the swooping and swinging simian friends. And little Hudson? If I had to guess, I would say he loved the choo-choo train ride the best of all....followed closely by his jam session on the bongo drums. Oh, and the animals? He liked those, too.
We also witnessed one very hilarious occurrence. As we stood in the big barn, viewing owls and pigs and lots of others, I watched as a young man walked toward the Llama Stall. He peeked his head in, taking a look at the big, white llama who was munching away on a mouthful of hay. In the blink of an eye, that llama was charging towards the partition, craning it's neck toward the man. All of a sudden, I saw the llama bare his crooked yellow teeth, and then....he proceeded to SPIT all over the man's face. It was nasty and entertaining all at once. I was thanking my lucky stars it didn't happen to me, especially after the zookeeper informed me that the "spit" was actually regurgitated vomit. Eeeeew.
I am so happy we had the opportunity to introduce lots of new and fascinating living things to our enthusiastic little animal lover.
